Prof. Nobuhiro Tsuji from Kyoto University visited SJTU

Published:2013-06-03

At the invitation of Prof. Xuejun Jin, Prof. Nobuhiro Tsuji from Kyoto University visited SJTU on Jun 3, 2013, and gave a presentation to all students and faculties at room 500 material building A (Yu Chin’s lecture hall). The topic of the presentation was “Mechanical Properties of Bulk Nanostructured Metals ~ towards Managing Both Strength and Ductility”.

Abstract:
Bulk nanostructured metals or ultrafine grained materials of which mean grain sizes are much smaller than 1 mm can be nowadays fabricated in bulky dimensions. The bulk nanostructured metals have been energetically studied, since they show superior mechanical properties, such as high strength and good toughness, and also unique phenomena that never happen in conventional grain-sized materials. One of the way to fabricate bulk nanostructure metals is severe plastic deformation (SPD) process in which huge plastic strain is applied to the materials. There have been developed various unique SPD processes. In the present lecture, unique structures and mechanical properties of bulk nanostructured metals, for example, extra hall-petch strengthening, yield point phenomena in pure aluminum, ‘hardening by annealing, softening by deformation’, and so on, will be introduced. Then, the possibilities to manage both high strength and good ductility in bulk nanostructured metals are discussed.
